DIY Idea: Linen Bread Bag 🍞
Looking for a simple and sustainable DIY project that adds a personal touch to your kitchen? Why not repurpose an old linen towel into a charming handmade bread bag? This delightful creation is the perfect way to keep your homemade loaves warm and fresh, while adding a dash of quirky style to your bread-baking routine. It’s super easy to do for all ages. My late mother taught me how to make items like this when I was 5 years old, just take caution with needles and kids.
What You’ll Need
✔ A linen tea towel or fabric scrap
✔ Needle & thread (or a sewing machine)
✔ A drawstring or twill tape, a few inches longer than your fabric
💡 Bonus: This also works great for storing fresh produce.
A Few Simple Steps
Fold the towel in half and sew along the side and bottom, leaving the top open. Any side works for this, if you’re using one of our towels I suggest leaving the side with the hanging loop as your top so that you can utilize it. I used white chalk & stitching on mine in the photos so you can see where to stitch.
Fold & pin the fabric over about an inch, essentially creating a small channel for the drawstring. Make sure your drawstring has an excess amount on each end so that there is room to play with tying it.
Stitch a straight hem across the fold so that it closes the channel, stopping halfway and leaving an inch or so un-hemmed to make the drawstring pull through easier.
Feed the drawstring through the channel. I find the easiest way is to make a small knot at the end of it and use a chopstick to feed it through like a giant needle.
Tie the drawstring together at the ends with a knot so you don’t lose them, pull to cinch, and voilà—you have a reusable, breathable bread bag!
